What Actually Makes a Room Feel Luxurious

Luxury in interior design is not about price. Some of the most expensive rooms I have ever seen feel cluttered, cold, and uncomfortable. And some of the most refined spaces I have designed were achieved on budgets that would surprise you.

What makes a room feel luxurious is proportion. Furniture that is scaled correctly to the space. Ceiling heights that are honored rather than ignored. Negative space that is treated as a design element, not an oversight.

It is material quality — not necessarily expensive materials, but materials that have weight, texture, and presence. A linen sofa in the right color will always feel more luxurious than a velvet sofa in the wrong one.

And it is editing. The discipline to remove the thing that is almost right in favor of the thing that is exactly right. Most rooms are not improved by addition. They are improved by subtraction.
